Ceramics is a traditional handcraft practised in Vietnam since the 10th century. It is a significant part of its deep history, art and contributes largely to the economy of the country. When looking beyond the brush strokes and beautiful artworks, you'll see characteristics that have transcended over time. Shaped by the course of history, ceramic art has developed its own form that is distinctly Vietnamese. Ceramic art has been a highly practised handcraft since the Lý dynasty, also known as the House of Lý, a Vietnamese royal family that ruled the kingdom of Đại Việt from 1009 to 1225. Before that, ceramics' local characteristics were similar to that of the Chinese. After the defeat of the Chinese by the Ly Dynasty in 1009, ceramics began to shape its own style by drawing inspiration from local traditions, culture, and environment.

Villages in Vietnam are renowned for their traditional handmade ceramics and pottery. Bat Trang, is one such old, well-established village in Hanoi, Vietnam's capital city. Bat Trang continues to preserve the traditional craft of handmade ceramics. This village has been famous for its ceramics for a thousand years. Throughout Vietnam, it is known for producing its distinctive ceramic dinnerware and ornamental decor called Bát Tràng porcelain.
